Dialectical Behavioural Informed Psychotherapy Group

Brighton-based DBT group therapy

About this service

At Flint Healthcare we are pleased to offer a Dialectical Behavioural Informed Psychotherapy Group. This Group introduces participants, principally, to the Dialectical Behavioural Therapy skills but also incorporates other approaches including RO-DBT, ACT and MSC*. The group runs over a period of 20 weeks and is facilitated by Claire Owens. After an introductory session, participants are expected to commit to the 20 week program. The Group takes place on a weekly basis and lasts for 1.5 hours.

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), is a form of psychotherapy designed to help individuals with emotion regulation issues manage their emotions, behaviours, and relationships more effectively. It has a strong research base for effectiveness in enabling increased levels of tolerance and management of emotional intensity and distress. It is suitable for people with attachment issues, difficulties with emotional regulation due to trauma and neurodiversity. DBT combines cognitive-behavioural techniques with mindfulness practices and focuses on balancing acceptance and change.

DBT in a group setting, involves skills training in four core areas: mindfulness (being present in the moment), distress tolerance (managing crises without making things worse), emotion regulation (understanding and controlling intense emotions), and interpersonal effectiveness (developing healthy and effective relationship skills). Participants are encouraged to practice these skills through group discussions and homework assignments, all facilitated by a trained DBT psychotherapist. The group format allows members to support each other, share experiences, and learn from one another’s challenges and successes.

*RO-DBT – Radically Open Dialectical Behavioural Therapy; ACT – Acceptance & Commitment Therapy; MSC – Mindfulness Self Compassion Therapy
