Dr Jason Read is an experienced and down to earth consultant psychiatrist in Brighton & Hove who specialises in the assessment and treatment of depression, bipolar disorder and psychosis. He is also particularly interested in managing the physical side effects of the medication that psychiatrists prescribe.

Dr Read has been a consultant psychiatrist in Sussex since 2004. He studied medicine at Liverpool University and completed his initial psychiatry training in the Liverpool area where he attained membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He completed his higher training at Guys, Kings and St Thomas’s Hospitals prior to returning to Sussex where he was born. During this time he was part of the team that researched into the effectiveness of Early Intervention in Psychosis Teams in the UK and published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.

Dr Read worked in Brighton and Hove Crisis Resolution Home Team from 2004-2008 and quickly became Acute Clinical Lead in Brighton as well as chair of the South-East Development Centre Crisis Resolution Home Team Forums.

In 2008 Dr Read moved to a clinical post in West Sussex in Rehabilitation and Assertive Outreach, developing and improving services there. His subsequent interest in clinical leadership and service improvement led him to hold numerous clinical leadership posts in the NHS in Sussex from 2010-2021, including Divisional Clinical Lead, Clinical Director and Associate Medical Director.

He was part of the national committee that developed the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) guidelines for Rehabilitation for adults with complex psychosis in 2020.

Clinical Interests

My main clinical interests are psychotic disorders and depression.

Dr Read led the Clinical Academic Group for Psychosis in Sussex until 2021 and this led to his passion in improving the physical health for people with serious mental illness. He worked with partner organisations across the NHS to develop the annual physical health check for Serious Mental Illness in Sussex, as well as being a reviewer for the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcomes and Death: Physical Healthcare of Inpatients in Mental Health Hospitals.

Personal Interests

When not at work you may find me walking or biking around the Downs, some considerable distance behind Richard (Tim will not even be in sight), at gigs or volunteering for nature charities.
