Rick is a Consultant Psychiatrist accredited as a specialist in both CAMHS and General Adult Psychiatry. At Flint Healthcare Rick is available to assess and treat young adults 18+ years of age presenting with possible Neurodevelopmental Conditions such as Autism Spectrum, ADHD and Tic Disorders. A full neurodevelopmental assessment and individual report are offered as part of the package which includes psychoeducation (provision of information about the Neurodevelopmental Condition) as well as assessment and treatment of any co-occurring conditions including OCD, Depression and Anxiety Disorders.
Rick studied Medicine at the Royal Free Hospital in London then trained in Psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry initially specialising in Child & Adolescent Mental Health. He spent most of his clinical career working within Early Intervention in Psychosis Services with 14-35 year olds, firstly in Australia (EPPIC in Melbourne) where he is accredited as a specialist in General Adult Psychiatry and was Medical Director (2005-2010) and then in the UK (Sussex) where he was Clinical Director and more recently Chief Medical Officer (2017-2021) in Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Rick has expertise in diagnosing developmental conditions such as Autism and ADHD presenting with co-occurring mental health conditions. He is comfortable with using a range of evidence based medication interventions, social prescribing, formulating a psychological understanding of complex mental health presentations and working with colleagues such as Clinical Psychologists/Therapists to promote recovery and achieve goals in a safe and structured way.
He is an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School and enjoys teaching undergraduate and post graduate students. He has research interests in youth mental health, Autism Spectrum Conditions and First Episode Psychosis with publications, book chapters and lectures on these subjects. His current clinical role in the NHS is in Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust with the CAMHS Assertive Outreach Team (CAOT) in Brighton & Hove which works with young people aged 14-25 who find it difficult to engage with standard clinic-based mental health services. He is also Clinical Lead for the 16-25 Pathway in the Trust.
