Dr Helen Hutchings

We are delighted that Dr Helen Hutchings, Consultant Psychiatrist has joined the Flint Healthcare team. Dr Hutchings works in the perinatal mental health services in the NHS as a consultant psychiatrist and is specialised in women’s mental health. This includes the management of pre-existing mental health disorders during the perinatal period, but also the treatment of perinatal specific illness (antenatal/postnatal depression, perinatal OCD, postpartum psychosis, tokophobia, birth trauma). She also specialises in prescribing in pregnancy and breastfeeding and giving pre-conception advice for patients considering a pregnancy with a history of mental health problems and/or taking mental health medication. Dr Hutchings has an interest in women’s health in general, including the effect of hormones on mental health and PMDD/menopause. 

Dr Hutchings has the deserved reputation of being thoughtful, thorough, approachable and empathetic. She takes a holistic approach to treatment, with an understanding of the importance of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. She has a special interest in medical psychotherapy which she brings into her work with patients.

Dr Hutchings in her work highlights the importance of thorough assessment to come to the correct diagnosis and enable appropriate treatment planning. Dr Hutchings has experience of diagnosing and treating ADHD as well as working with autistic people. She enjoys working with patients with mood and anxiety disorders.

Dr Hutchings has worked as a psychiatrist since 2013 and as a consultant psychiatrist since 2022. She studied medicine at Cardiff medical school and undertook broad psychiatry training in Sussex as well as working at the prestigious South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. She is qualified in medical education and regularly teaches both undergraduate and postgraduates.

Outside of Flint, Dr Hutchings enjoys spending time with her family, walking her dog, reading novels and playing netball.
