Autism (or autism spectrum condition) has different ways of presenting especially in women and girls. Our team takes time to understand each individual’s strengths, challenges, and unique profile, not just to determine a diagnosis, but to help you move forward with insight, support and confidence. If you’re considering an autism assessment, contact us to book an initial consultation.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people communicate, process information and relate to others. It is lifelong and can impact many aspects of daily life, from sensory processing and social interaction, to routines, thinking patterns and emotional regulation.
While some people are diagnosed in early childhood, others may not receive a diagnosis until adolescence or adulthood. This is especially common for individuals who have learned to mask their traits or whose experiences were misunderstood growing up. For many, an adult autism diagnosis can offer relief, self-understanding and access to appropriate support.
Getting a timely autism assessment can often be challenging, with waiting lists stretching over a year in some regions. Choosing a private route offers:
- A significantly faster pathway to assessment and diagnosis
- Individualised support tailored to your specific questions and concerns
- A detailed diagnostic report you can use for workplace, academic, or healthcare accommodations
- A discreet, respectful service with flexible appointment options
- Follow-up guidance and referrals to help with next steps post-diagnosis
Our process is thorough, collaborative and always led by qualified clinicians with extensive experience in neurodevelopmental conditions.
Autism can look different in different people, particularly between genders, cultures and age groups. If you recognise several of the following experiences in yourself or someone you care about, it may be worth exploring further:
- Persistent difficulty with social communication or relationships
- Strong need for routines or predictable environments
- Intense focus on specific topics or interests
- Sensory sensitivity to external stimulus such as noise, light or touch
- Feeling “different” but not knowing why
- Masking or copying others in social situations to fit in
- Exhaustion or burnout from navigating everyday life
- Difficulties in understanding and expressing emotions
Remember, a diagnosis is not about putting a label on someone, it’s about understanding how their brain works, and what helps them thrive.
At Flint Healthcare, we follow recognised diagnostic tools and clinical frameworks such as the ADOS-2 and structured developmental interviews. While each assessment is tailored to the individual, a typical pathway includes:
Pre-assessment Screening
Information you provide will be assessed to understand your goals, concerns, and whether full assessment is appropriate.
Structured Clinical Interview
This may involve discussing developmental history, social and communication experiences, sensory preferences, and more. For younger clients, we often speak with parents or caregivers as part of this stage.
Behavioural Observation
This part may involve structured tasks or conversation designed to observe communication, interaction, and behaviour relevant to the diagnostic criteria.
Diagnostic Formulation
Once the assessment is complete, we compile our findings into a clear diagnostic report. This includes whether the criteria for Autism Spectrum conditions are met, and provides recommendations for support or further services.
Feedback and Guidance
You’ll have a follow-up appointment to discuss the outcome, ask questions, and receive personalised advice on navigating life post-diagnosis.
Our private autism assessments are suitable for:
- Adults who suspect they may be autistic and want formal clarity
- Teens (16+) experiencing social, sensory or emotional difficulties
- Individuals previously misdiagnosed or diagnosed with related conditions (e.g., ADHD, anxiety)
- People who mask well and may have been overlooked by traditional assessment routes
- Parents/carers seeking support for a young person struggling to thrive
We understand that pursuing a diagnosis can be a big emotional step. Our clinicians offer thoughtful, inclusive support no matter where you are in your journey.
Autism often overlaps with other conditions, including:
- ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)
- OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder)
- Anxiety and depression
- Sensory processing difficulties
- Eating disorders or issues around food and control
This downloadable guide explains how autism often co-occurs with ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia, highlighting the shared traits and distinct features of each condition. Using the Autism Framework, it explores how overlapping sensory, cognitive and processing differences can shape an individual’s profile. Clear and accessible, it’s a helpful resource for anyone looking to better understand the relationships between these neurodevelopmental conditions.
