Dr Michael Hobkirk is a highly experienced Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist specialising
exclusively in the comprehensive assessment and management of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD) in children and young people aged 6 to 17. A central focus of his practice is
providing expert care for patients with ADHD and co-occurring conditions, ensuring that young
people with complex profiles – such as those with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) – receive
seamless, integrated ADHD assessment, medication management, and tailored treatment support.
His clinical expertise also addresses critical developmental challenges that frequently overlap with
ADHD, including dedicated sleep management guidance.

After graduating from St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London School of Medicine in 2001, Dr
Hobkirk completed his specialist training in Oxford and the West Midlands, combining clinical
excellence with a deep commitment to high-quality, evidence-based care. Prior to taking up his
consultant post in Sussex in 2010, he initially served as a consultant in a general adolescent inpatient
unit.

Clinical Interests

His extensive clinical background spans some of the most complex tiers of psychiatric care, from
leading Early Intervention for Psychosis services and community CAMHS teams treating the full
spectrum of mental health difficulties – including trauma, anxiety, depression, and OCD – to providing
acute hospital CAMHS liaison services for young people admitted to medical wards. Currently leading
a specialist NHS neurodevelopmental service in West Sussex , Dr Hobkirk’s passion for holistic,
accessible care also led him to establish the Sustainable School Liaison Project. This innovative
initiative was named a Psychiatric Team of the Year by the Royal College of Psychiatrists, celebrated
for its environmental sustainability, excellent clinical outcomes, and success in keeping families
genuinely supported within their own school communities.

Dr Hobkirk adopts a neuro-affirmative, comprehensive approach to his practice. Rather than focusing
solely on a diagnosis, he helps children and their carers better understand their unique profile of
strengths and needs, laying the groundwork for tailored support and ongoing development. He is deeply committed to shared decision-making, partnering closely with children, young people and their families to ensure everyone feels informed and empowered to make the best choices together.

An established senior leader in medical education, Dr Hobkirk has a distinguished track record in
high-level regional and national roles. He was recently an Associate Dean for NHS England and
previously served as the Director of Medical Education for Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
He has also held several senior roles at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, including College Lead for
Training and Specialist Advisor for Leadership Development.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, Dr Hobkirk is a devoted husband and parent who loves spending time outdoors,
playing squash, cooking, and picking up his guitar.
