Dr MacNicoll is an experienced psychiatrist with over a decade of clinical practice in both the UK and Australia. He has broad expertise across general adult and older adult psychiatry, treating a wide range of mental health difficulties including depression, anxiety disorders, ADHD, OCD, bipolar affective disorder, psychosis and memory impairment. He places emphasis on taking time to understand each person’s story and experiences, offering a warm, compassionate and collaborative approach that helps people feel heard, supported and empowered in their recovery.

Alongside his extensive work in general adult mental health, Dr MacNicoll has a particular clinical interest in the assessment and management of memory problems, cognitive disorders and dementia. His roles across community teams, inpatient units, crisis services and memory clinics have equipped him to support adults of all ages with both straightforward and highly complex presentations.

Dr MacNicoll currently also works as a Consultant Psychiatrist in the NHS on a Virtual Ward for Older Adults in East Sussex, providing intensive community support to help people remain safely at home while managing significant mental and physical health needs.

He completed his medical degree and intercalated BSc at the University of Manchester, followed by an MSc in Psychiatry with Distinction at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. He is a Member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. His academic work includes publications on dementia care, physical health monitoring in psychiatric settings and healthcare digital literacy, with presentations delivered at national and international conferences.  He is an honorary clinical lecturer at Brighton and Sussex Medical School

Personal Interests

Outside clinical work, Dr MacNicoll is a committed long-distance runner and marathon enthusiast, achieving Good for Age qualifying times for major international races. He lives locally with his young family, who remain central to his life outside medicine.
